The short answer
Cupping therapy kya hai? Cupping is a traditional therapy in which cups create gentle suction on the skin, lifting the muscle beneath. It may help ease back, neck and shoulder stiffness, and many patients report feeling looser afterwards, though results vary. At Avni Wellness, Sector 49, Noida, dry cupping takes 30 minutes and costs ₹600.
Cupping therapy, in simple words
Cupping therapy is a traditional hands-on therapy in which cups are placed on the skin and a gentle vacuum, or suction, lifts the skin and muscle beneath. Massage presses down into the body; cupping does the opposite and draws the tissue upward. Many people describe the feeling as a deep, slow stretch in places they cannot otherwise reach.
In Hindi, people often ask us “cupping therapy kya hai” or “cupping se kya hota hai”. The honest answer: it is a drug-free therapy that may help ease muscle stiffness, especially in the upper back, shoulders and lower back. It works alongside medical care, not in place of it, and results vary from person to person.
Why do people try cupping?
At our Sector 49 clinic in Noida, most people who ask about cupping come with one of these complaints:
- Kamar dard (lower back stiffness), often from long hours of sitting
- Gardan aur kandhon ki jakdan (neck and shoulder tightness) from laptop and phone use
- Upper back knots between the shoulder blades
- Muscle soreness after workouts or sport
- Tension headaches linked to tight neck muscles
Many patients report that they feel looser and lighter after a session, and that movement feels easier. It is not a quick fix for every problem, and we will tell you if another therapy may suit you better.
Types of cupping
1. Dry cupping
Cups create suction and stay in place for a few minutes, or glide gently over oiled skin. There are no cuts. This is the most common form and our usual starting point. At Avni Wellness, a dry cupping session takes about 30 minutes and costs ₹600.
2. Wet cupping (hijama)
After a short round of dry cupping, the therapist makes a few very small, shallow marks on the skin with a sterile single-use blade and reapplies the cup to draw a small amount of blood. A session takes about 40–50 minutes. It is offered only after consultation and with your consent. Read our dry vs wet cupping guide or the hijama page for details.
3. Cupping with other therapies
Cupping often pairs well with acupressure. The cups loosen the tissue, so the pressure work can go deeper. Your plan is built around your body, not around one technique.
What happens in a cupping session?
- Consultation: we ask about your pain, health history and medicines.
- Preparation: you lie comfortably in a private room, the skin is cleaned and fresh single-use cups are opened in front of you.
- Session: the cups are applied and the suction is adjusted to your comfort.
- Aftercare: you get simple advice: drink water, avoid a very hot shower or heavy workout that day, and keep the area clean.
Cupping ke nishaan (marks): should you worry?
The round marks are the most talked-about part of cupping. They come from suction drawing blood closer to the skin’s surface. They are not bruises from an injury and are usually painless. Most fade within a few days to a week. Darker marks do not mean “more problem”; they vary with the skin, the suction and the area.
Is cupping safe?
When done hygienically by a trained therapist, cupping is generally well tolerated. Mild soreness, temporary marks and, rarely, light-headedness can happen. It is not suitable for everyone. Please tell us first if you are pregnant, have a bleeding disorder or anaemia, take blood thinners, have diabetes, skin infections, broken skin, varicose veins, a fever or recent surgery.

Common questions
Cupping therapy: aapke sawaal
Cupping therapy ek traditional therapy hai jisme skin par cups lagakar halka vacuum (suction) banaya jaata hai.
Most people feel a firm pulling or stretching sensation rather than pain. Very tight areas can feel more intense, and the suction is adjusted to your comfort throughout the session.
Please speak to us first if you are pregnant, have a bleeding disorder or anaemia, take blood thinners, have diabetes, a skin infection, broken skin, varicose veins, recent surgery or a fever.
A dry cupping session is ₹600 and takes about 30 minutes. Your first consultation is free. The fee for hijama (wet cupping) is shared after the consultation.
There is no fixed rule. Many people come once a week for a few weeks and then review how they feel. Your therapist will suggest a pace after the assessment; results vary from person to person.
